Shot over a period of 7 years, BÁNYA maps the varying relationships between a rural Hungarian village and an expanding heavy mining industry in the region. First visiting in 2017, George Booth-Cole has since built relationships with farmers, traders, and other locals, conducting interviews and documenting their personal and professional life. In a time of rapid economic change and government corruption in these rural areas, this is a document of a community processing its loss of agricultural practices and traditions.
“It’s been seven years since I first visited Bugyi. The people in these pictures opened up their lives to me. They allowed me to witness and document their daily relationship with a system choking their livelihoods to death.”
The exhibition also features a film projection of the same topic by David Mikulan.
George Booth-Cole has also produced a 244-page rhizograph artists’ book of the project, 170 numbered copies, published by Club Del Prado, which will also be available from ISBN+.
